Coping with Burnout

Do you ever get burned out? I do. I am behind in my work while everyone else seems to be doing grand. So I thought I would have an honest conversation about what you can do if you feel like me. First, take a breath. It's very likely that other people feel the same way you do. Second, know that it's okay to reach this low. It happens to everyone, and it's only natural that this happens every so often. Third, remember that you have to put your oxygen mask on first before helping others. It's okay if you need to take some time to rejuvenate. That being said, I am providing some options to help you get back on track when you're having major burnout.

1. Rearrange Your Office

I do this all the time. For me, it ranges anywhere from moving things around on my desk to actually rearranging the furniture. By changing up my atmosphere I tell my mind that I'm starting fresh. The power of Feng Shui is real.

2. Spend Extra Time Planning

I also like to redo my to-do lists, agenda, etc. whenever I am feeling low. This helps me take a broad look at what I need to do and prioritize the most important items. Like moving my furniture, it also tricks my brain into thinking I'm starting fresh.

3. Take A Personal Day

It's okay to take time off for your mental health. Taking a personal day is nothing to be ashamed of. Put your automatic replies on, and take the day for yourself. Do whatever makes you happy. Maybe that's working out, painting your nails, or taking your dog on a walk. Maybe it's sleeping in and watching Netflix. It's up to you how you spend your day, but for some people it's helpful to do something productive (as long as it's not work-related). You might need to do laundry, clean the house, clean your car, or catch up on personal phone calls.

4. Take It One Step At A Time

Whenever I am at a low point, I have to remind myself to take baby steps. When my mind is overwhelmed, it is prudent that I only focus on a couple of items at a time. I tell myself that if I can do just these two to-do items I can take a break. Often, I find that once I get started the mojo starts to flow. It might be only a trickle at first, but the river will follow.

I hope this helps you rejuvenate whenever you get burned out and I hope this reminds you that it's okay to not be okay.
