1. Adaptability - Evolving My Systems
Sometimes, you just don't know until you know. So adaptability is key in creating your operational systems. I spent the better part of a year and a half developing and evolving my processes. It took multiple cases of trial and error to find the system that worked best for me and my clients, but I finally did it (for the most part). I'm still open to new ideas, but I've at least cemented a basic operating system. I even codified it in a manual so those working for me can replicate it. Don't get me wrong, the process of making processes can be annoying and even aggravating, but once you finally settle into a system it'll be worth the trial and error.
Specifically, I have a streamlined process (codified in a manual) for potential new client intake, new client intake, opening the file, closing the file, and general case maintenance. To make things even easier, I also developed an intern handbook where I give instructions for all of their potential tasks. I also made and continually update checklists for the actual practice of law (i.e., how do you file something, how do you obtain alternative service, etc.). Even more, I made two master contact lists, one for court contact information, and one for attorney referrals.
2. Website Design & Branding
I can honestly say that love my law firm's website. It underwent two or three remodels, but I am completely in awe of the final product. I really wanted to have client resources available on my website and provide a place to explore everything I have to offer. I used Canva to create infographics as downloads, embedded links to resources, and I even started a blog for my law firm.
But before I began designing my website, I had to design a logo. I used a company called LogoPerfecto and, after a lot of back and forth, I finally found what I was looking for. Taking the extra time to design a logo I loved was so important because that logo goes into everything - my email signature, business cards, letterhead, pens, mugs, sweatshirts, etc. Yes, I may have bought everyone Erinakes Law sweatshirts for Christmas. I loved designing the sweatshirts on VistaPrint and they turned out great!
3. Mentorships
During the last two years, I have done my best to take advantage of the resources and programming available to me. This included developing a network of attorneys I could call and ask questions. To do so, I participated in mentoring groups, bar programing, and even a leadership class. I essentially now have a rotating wheel of attorneys that are willing to put up with my questions and I could not be more grateful. If any of you are reading this... THANK YOU!
