Zoom Etiquette

We're now in a brave new world of technology. That includes learning to use Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams. So what rules of etiquette should you follow when using these platforms? Here is my advice:
1. Background
It is vital that you have a professional background. This means making sure your office is picked up, and that there are no weird personal items laying around. If you need to take a call when you're not at your office, try to find a blank wall to sit in front of. Another option is to use the "blur" background option when you join your call. Some people also like to upload their logo to use as a background. While this may be a common option, I personally prefer to have an office background.
You'll also want to consider your frame. Does your "box" show just your head? Or does it show your upper body too? It's a good rule of thumb to show your upper body (rather than just your head) as it is more professional.
2. Attire
You are going to want to ensure you are wearing the appropriate attire for your Zoom calls. If you are appearing in court, please remember to wear pants. You never know if you need to stand up to grab something. If you are on a casual call, your look is up to you.
3. Where do I look?
One thing I am still getting used to is where to look during a call. The best way to ensure you are looking (mostly) at the camera is to have it just above your monitor. Make sure that you look up during Zoom calls and remember people can see you if you're slouching or looking down.
4. Pets
We all love our pets. For a casual call, it's perfectly acceptable to have them make an appearance. However, if you are in court or mediation, please remember to keep your pets out of the room you are in. Unfortunately, it is unprofessional to have your cat walking in front of your monitor or your dog constantly barking.
Hopefully my commentary gives you a good sense of how to conduct yourself during Zoom calls.
